THE DATA FOR THE STUDY were derived from the National Longitudinal Survey of Labor Market Experience of Youth (NLSY) from 1979 to 1988. The survey contains human capital, earnings, occupational and other demographic information for over 12,000 black and white females and males. In 1979, members of the sample were between the ages of 14 and 22.

The National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS) are a set of surveys designed to gather information at multiple points in time on the labor market activities and other significant life events of several groups of men and women. NLS data have served as an important tool for economists, sociologists, and other researchers for more than 50 years.

The NLS family of surveys includes seven cohorts, three ongoing and four original cohorts (for whom data collection has ended). Sponsored and largely funded by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the NLSY data do not primarily contribute to official government statistics; instead the microdata are available to researchers for basic research on the life course. This report uses data from the National Longitudinal Survey — Youth to examine the dynamics of the labor market experience of young people entering the labor market.
