Novel Juice non toxic DNA Stain keeps your lab safe. Safe – Absence of mutagenity and low toxicity (LC>5000mg/kg) as compared to Ethidium Bromide. Low Environmental Impact – Compliance with the Clean Water Act standards. Ethidium bromide has been commonly used as a DNA stain for many years. However, ethidium bromide is harmful if swallowed, and is very toxic if inhaled. In powder form, it is considered an irritant to the eyes and upper respiratory tract.

Ethidium bromide has been commonly used as a DNA stain for many years. However, ethidium bromide is harmful if swallowed, and is very toxic if inhaled. In powder form, it is considered an irritant to the eyes and upper respiratory tract. Ethidium bromide has been shown to be mutagenic in various in vitro assays and is an aquatic toxin. Green
Ethidium bromide is used to visualize DNA in agarose gels and in many cesium chloride gra-dient protocols. The 10 mg/ml ethidium bromide stock solution can be diluted for gel staining or used as provided for CsC1 gradient protocols. Caution: Ethidium bromide is a toxic chemical and a mutagen.

Ethidium bromide is mutagenic and moderately toxic and must be handled with care. The powder form is considered an irritant to the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. This is unlike ethidium bromide, which is genotoxic at typical usage concentrations (0.5 µg/ml). Both dyes are cytotoxic, however, at commercially available stock concentrations. These data indicate that Diamond™ Nucleic Acid Dye is significantly less toxic than ethidium bromide within the typical concentrations used to stain gels.

Ethidium bromide is highly toxic through inhalation. If dust or aerosol formation is possible, perform procedures in a chemical fume hood. When possible, purchase Ethidium bromide is mutagenic and moderately toxic and must be handled with care. The powder form is considered an irritant to the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. I usually find the treatment of Ethidium bromide in the lab widely exaggerates the true dangers of this chemical. It is not really toxic (the LD 50 is 1.5 g/kg bodyweight, as a comparision NaCl has a LD 50 of 3 g/kg).
Avoid direct contact by wearing the proper personal protective equipment, i.e. gloves, safety glasses and a fastened lab coat. Ethidium bromide is highly toxic through inhalation.
